When developing a new concept I find it extremely helpful to get the idea on paper, and share it with thought partners to help sharpen, strengthen, and improve the concept. You have to be comfortable hearing lots of different opinions, and have no fear of the red pen. This approach speeds up concept development, brings in expertise and alternative views and also helps ensure buy-in and adoption for the final solution.
We're definitely fans of iterating early and often at the MIX. In fact we're doing it right now with the site!
I'm curious about how this has worked in the context of an actual project. Can you tell us more about how you go about this? Are there any rules or practices you've discovered, e.g. is there a certain mix of "thought partners" that gets you to "better" more quickly? are there some stumbling blocks to look out for? beyond the personal discipline (and, I think, courage) to put your half-formed baby chick of an idea out for all to jump on, are there any conditions you have to create organizationally to make this kind of process work? Can you tell us the story of how you've developed this practice inside your organization and how it's changed working life?
