- Beware the press: As a fresh-faced sales consultant, I arrived at my office one morning to find a copy of the UK’s leading weekly computer press on my desk with myself mis-quoted in the front-page headline and a note from the company chairman to see him immediately! I have been more cautious with the press ever since….
- The power of improvisation: In a sales support role a part of my job was to demonstrate one of the first PC-based systems engineering tools. Unfortunately the Barco projector (huge, complex and fragile machines) failed as soon as the engineer left the room and I was faced with 40 potential clients expecting to see a demonstration. My boss stood-up and mischievously announced I would now walk them through a virtual demonstration. I looked at him in amazement (moi?), my jaw dropped, I looked back at the restless crowd and slowly adjusted to my fate and proceeded to do just that, “Imagine a PC screen divided into…….”
- Be prepared: After a few pints before a Nina Simone concert in Covent Garden it was quite clear that I would not make the interval. It was an open-stage with seats on 3-sides and unfortunately I could not work-out how to get to the toilets on the other side without walking across the stage. I was polite enough to wait for a song to end but then boldly strode across the stage during the applause much to the amazement of Nina and the audience. I did not hear what Nina said but it was none too polite. I was met outside the gents for an escorted journey back to my seat.
