Intercontinental movement of people has led to a diversified workforce in many countries such as in the Northern American, Europe Union, Australasia nations. The diversified society consist individuals from different walks of life with different cultural beliefs, values, experiences, and lifecycle stages. This diversification has somewhat generated various issues within an organization in terms of teamwork, motivation, performance, communication and leadership. Despite most organizations and individuals understood the merit in working under a heterogeneous team environment. However, such team environment has often resulted in under-desirable productivity and poor performances.
“Star Employee” program looks at select talented employees across different departments, regions, and countries from the organization to form a temporary team to work together on a number projects within a length of period. The aim of such program is to provide those selected employees the opportunity to work in a very diversified team to gain abilities to anticipate effective teamwork, skills in motivating diversified individuals, apply and judge various performances, adapt effective communication in the diversified environment and develop a firm leadership style that potentially enable them to return to their original workplace and become a successful leader.
Selection progress
Individuals to be selected by appropriate performance measure set by the organization. Individuals shall demonstrate the ability to make significant contribution to the organization both individually and as a team member. Furthermore, the individual selected should have proof the desire to take up further career in the organization and a strong self motivation to actualize oneself in the social group one belongs to.
Implementation
After talented individuals are selected to attend the program, they will be put together into team(s) depending on the size of the selected population. It is always desirable to allocate the team member into one location so that face to face communication can be performed. However, members can also utilize the visual face to face telecommunication under the circumstance of cost concern.
The team then gets assigned to tasks that the organization is aiming to achieve such as targeting new markets, new business initiatives, or operational developments etc. The program then evaluates individual’s personal performance and overall team achievement upon the completion of the project. As a new project starts a different member to be elected as team leader in order to give all members the opportunities to develop one’s own leadership styles. Team members eventually are assigned leadership roles either in one’s original department or another department once all projects are successfully completed.
Aim of the “Star Employee” program
The aim of the project is to force selected members to adapt the environment where diversity is heavily influencing performances. It is aiming upon the completion of such program individuals shall be able to grasp the knowledge in dealing with various diversity issues and able to utilize diversity as an useful tool not a harmful hazard.
Team work: “Star Employee” team which consist members with different nationality, age, gender, and lifestyle stage to work as a team to tackle down specific projects that the organization is aiming to achieve. This will stimulate the individual to understand more about how a heterogeneous team can work effectively to increase productivities and efficiency.
Motivation: “Star Employee” members with different motivation factors will expose their own motives to each other. This enables each individual to understand more about the motivation technique and able to utilize this technique in the future when leading one’s own team.
Performance: “Star Employee” members under the influence of one’s unique motives will focus on different performance measures. The program will ensure that individual member to have better understanding on why one might perform differently than others in the team and utilize appropriate measure to reward or stimulate certain performance.
Communication: Yet this is one of the most key components in the teamwork environment. “Star Employee” member shall achieve the skill to effectively communicate with others that has totally different background and values.
Implementation of the “Star Employee” program enables organization to develop its own desired leaders that already have in-depth knowledge about the organization.
The program also can stimulate individual employee who has a desire of career progression to perform at a higher standard.
Upon completion of the project, the members can form a stronger relationship amongst each other and further enhance the inter-departmental cooperation in the organization.
As the program requires a cost centre to operate, it is important for the organization first of all to determine the method to run such program. Running a cost analyze enables the organization to determine the scale of the program, the location of program centre, and the method of communication.
As discussed, the organization can adapt more affordable telecommunication to connect the team members from different locations under the strong pressure of cost concerns. However, the face to face communication in one location is the most desirable to enhance the team members work more closely with each other.
In order to establish the program successfully, an organization shall then analyze and examine its employee performance measure to grasp the required performances to be nominated for the selection phase.
The nomination criteria shall include employee’s contributions to the organization inside and outside of one’s duty.
In shall include employee’s conduct within the organizational policy i.e. employee is able to perform strictly according to the organization’s code of conduct etc.
It shall also include employee’s ability in interaction with others in the organization or the members of the public.
