The world of work has grown increasingly complex in recent years, making the task of management increasingly difficult and the ability for people to self-manage is severely constrained. Managing performance on a local basis is perhaps still doable but managing it on an enterprise-wide basis is frustrating even the best managers, executives, employees, partners and customers. Managing on an “enterprise-wide” basis in a global organization defies imagination and it is painfully apparent that the approaches of the past are not up to the task. What is often pointed to as a failure of execution is in fact evidence of disconnects between strategic goals and initiatives and short-term tactics and activities. Yet, in the end, organizations don’t do anything, people do. What managers and executives need is a way of linking and aligning individual outcomes with corporate goals and initiatives and then of doing what is necessary to make the probability of achieving those individual outcomes as high as possible. In this way, they can turn complexity into a competitive advantage by enabling the tasks, outcomes, initiatives and goals that bring about individual and organizational success.
In many organizations, strategic goals and initiatives are not being successfully achieved. This is often chalked up to a failure in execution. It is more accurately attributable to a lack of an appropriate achievement framework. Organizations, their leaders, employees and partners do not have a discipline of achievement, a set of practices that lead to achievement and, most important, they lack a suitable collaborative software platform that would enable them to dynamically define, monitor and manage the achievements of individuals and the organization. In short, organizations don’t have the means to ensure everyone can achieve what they set out to achieve. The problem is being amplified by the escalating and accelerating complexities people and organizations are facing.
Shared Performance provides an achievement framework that consists of practices, a discipline and a platform for improving the achievement of individuals and organizations for shared success. The discipline is known as “Outcome Management” and it provides the bridge between individual effort and organizational goals and initiatives. The practices are those associated with achievement and the platform is a software suite known as SP ATTAIN. Together, these three components of an achievement framework greatly increase the odds that people and organizations will achieve what they set out to make happen.
- Improved achievements by people and organizations
- Improved alignment between individual efforts and organizational goals and initiatives
- Increased visibility, transparency and accountability
