The corporate headache: Too many managers, not enough leaders

Yes, it is time to reinvent management but there is a key management attribute that all organizations will keep trying to cultivate and grow like a golden treasure. That management attribute is "Leadership" and even though the times may change that attribute seems very stable over time and universal to me. Times may change, management practices may evolve but Leadership itself will stay because Leadership is all about How we get the work done. Management practices must evolve because what worked in the world of yesterday no longer works in the world of today: Everything is going Global, Virtual, complexity is higher than ever, the pace is getting faster, results must be demonstrated faster than ever, expectations have never been so high... In that highly complex high paced new environment, "Command & Control" just does not work any longer, believing that a single individual known as the "manager" has all the answers is just illusion. Furthermore, believing that this same individual can develop by and for himself all the knowledge and skills he will need to be successful in the new Knowledge economy is certainly as much illusion. The manager or the leader in each and everyone of us must acknowledge his own limitations, he must accept them and look for these strengths immediately available in the others when he is not in a position to provide them. We are all leaders in some place. Do our managers know where they shall not lead because someone on their team would actually do it better and faster than them? Are they ready to delegate and give away? Are they ready to concede that they have on their teams people, who are more knowledgeable and competent than they are themselves in specific areas? The management transformation does not start with the processes and tools of the organization, like any transformation initiative, it starts with oneself...
