Summary

Lack of organisational commitment to openness and transparency often leads to organisations recreating - at high cost - solutions which can be accessed for free. These recreated solutions never match the benefits of the 'public' platforms, such as Twitter, Linked In etc, as many rely on high social interaction and networking by the global audience (as well as across your organisation).

Instead organisations should embrace those global platforms that allow for knowledge sharing, collaboration and innovation across organisational boundaries, however this requires a total cultural/behavioural shift from 'distrust' to 'trust', from 'left brain' thinking to 'right brain' thinking, from 'being competative' to 'being collaborative'. What behaviours do your leaders encourage?

Closing the door on existing platforms will have a major impact on organisations' ability to survive, whether you are privite, third or public sector!
