I'm a business journalist and management writer. Last year I published the book The Last Manager (in Dutch). In the book I postulate that the manager is becoming extinct. We don't need him/her anymore. Workers are very well capable of managing their own work. If we let them do that, they are more productive, happier etc.. In the book I have some great examples of this. One is Buurtzorg Nederland, a homecare organization with 4.000 employees but no managers. They are 30 percent more effective (cheaper).
This spring I started an online platform www.nieuworganiseren.nu (sorry, mostly in Dutch again). Here we are looking at new, innovative ways of organizing work. For example with self-organisation, working in teams with no hiƫrarchy. I believe, with you, that we have to change the way we organise work.
Yes: it's time to reinvent management! But without the managers.
