Make Collaboration, the currency of MIX community with a “nothing is non discussable” type collaborative platform!

By Charles Prabakar on February 8, 2013

Make Collaboration not only the cornerstone, but also make it the part and parcel of the Mixer’s DNA and motivate MIX’ers and help each other in all dimensions. One such collaborative idea is Create a collaborative platform with “nothing is non discussable type mindset”, where anyone can post a question and be rest assured that a fellow mixer will care to answer it. Some of the features within this “nothing is non discussable platform is” First and foremost, position this platform as one’s alter ego. In other words, every mixer should have the courage and confidence to ask the question to this platform, as if they will be asking to their self or alter egos. In a way, we are creating a “TRUSTED FRIEND AWAY FROM FRIEND” platform, where anything goes in a confidential way. Some of the questions one can get answers, include, but not limited to are • I am considering starting a new start-up business.... • I need guidance to get into a top tier consulting job or a Fortune 500 firm • I need guidance on pursuing my grad school or Doctoral research in a top tier school • I need guidance to publish my article in a leading journal • I need guidance to publish some articles as a book with a top publisher? • And the list it goes on and on. Once Mixers’ see the value of making this type of collaboration as the currency of their trust, then it will become a true MIX community!

Hi Charles--this is a good idea. As far as tools, we've being thinking along the same lines, perhaps something equivalent to Quora (https://www.quora.com/) or StackOverFlow (http://stackoverflow.com/) or its more populist Stack Exchange (http://stackexchange.com/) but exclusively devoted to helping people with management innovation issues and challenges. Do these examples seem kind of like what you are talking about?

Yes Chris, I meant something along the same lines, you have alluded. That being said - while the tools you have suggested are a great starting point – we may also have to augment them with proper processes (and policies), so that, it will, not only motivate the Mixers to ask the so called “non discussable” questions freely (without any inhibitions), but also, motivate/incentivize the mavericks or fellow Mixers, to answer them as well.

In a way, this platform, in the long run, can also evolve into an online management innovation academy and/or niche innovation practicing platform (e.g. Maven), as some of the other Mixers have alluded. The key is instilling trust as the foundational fabric of this collaborative platform, so that Mixers will open up lot more freely, with their so called non discussable type questions, in a confidential way, once they develop a rapport with the Mavericks, who chose to answer their first “pulse check” questions. Once the trust is established, you will be amazed, how people will open up with follow-up threads (perhaps in 1:1 mode and/or open mode based on their style/choosing) and eventually, it can also turn into an e-mentoring platform, if the maverick sees a potential in that aspiring MIXer.

After the conversation thread has resulted in a win: win outcome, the summary of the conversation can also be posted for the benefit of the larger audiences, perhaps by withholding the name etc, from privacy standpoint, so that a fellow Mixer, who may be struggling with a similar, so called non discussable question, can also benefit from it.

I guess the possibilities are huge, and so, let us start in a small way, using some of the tools you have suggested and then grow it. I will be glad to play my role, if the MIX leadership sees a value in a platform like this. Thanks Chris for taking the time to research and propose these wonderful tools.
Regards,
Charles
