Hack:
Developing Leaders in an Industry Cohort
Increasingly, value in the market is being created by ideas that span across industries and customer segments.
Would it not be a great idea to develop leaders in an Industry Cohort that will expand a leaders vision and understanding and help them develop solutions that can span an industry and better still across industries. This can also let a company utilize the expertise that organizations have developed (Dell for Supply Chain, P&G for Market Research, McKinsey for Strategy etc)
Then, organizations are selected with whom partnerships can be developed so that there can be leader exchange for a span of time.
HR/Business Leadership Initiate the discussion with partner organizations to develop a program to enable leaders to gain as much exposure as possible, as well as keeping this leader exchange purposeful for both organization.
Private clouds can be used to bring this cohort of leaders together post their exchange so that they can continue working with each other on projects.
Few ideas that i think can help kickstart:
a. Start with organizations that are your (close) partner in business, so that trust levels are higher
b. Start with partnering with smaller organizations where risk of losing your resource might be lesser
c. Have Agreements with leaders that discourage them from joining the other companies for some duration post their rotation
d. Utilize contacts with some of your ex-employees who would have moved to these organizations to suggest projects etc where you can partner.
Rahul, thanks for this -- a great idea.
I've seen similar proposals, and they resonate with me because they seem like a good way for organizations to capture and capitalize on something that's happening naturally: people moving around to improve their skills. Too many companies view an employee's exit as a betrayal. They would be better served to congratulate the departing employee, keep in touch, and hope they return some day, more valuable than before.
Any thoughts on how companies might facilitate this kind of exchange and partnership with the other members of the cohort?

I think more than the logistics, it is dependent on Mindset changes needed inside organizations.
We all need to realize that value creation will increasingly happen at intersection of industries and specilizations and leaders are human resources essential for creating shared value. Similar to other resources that organizations have shared (Manufacturing space/ test resources/ Networks etc), this resource should be brought together to create impact through new ideas.
