Back then my Manager showed me the 10 principles of Egoless Programming. This helped me going through these reviews painlessly. I have adopted them as guidelines as a Knowledge Worker in my whole carrer.
These principles can easily be extended to the Knowledge Worker and to the Manager.
The hack : print + pin the 10 principles of egoless Knowledge Worker and of the Egoless Manager in your open space. Communicate, discuss and collaboratively readjust these to your own company/culture/context.
And then follow them.

Great idea! I've seen lots of cases where people were counterproductive just because of their egos. I've actually taught a course on removing organizational toxicity, which is partially based on this concept.
Unfortunately it's not so simple to implement this concept in the real world. In order for it to be effective, everyone must lose their ego, not just the select people. Otherwise people with ego will belittle those without it and the problem will come back.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the comment; No-one said it was easy. But I've seen this working. I've seen the effect on the atmosphere and the productivity of the team.
It's not a question of losing ego, it's a matter of knowing when to put it aside to focus on project and team priority instead.
It's not easy but it definitely is worth.
