In future - the world’s greatest creative work, music, screenplays, novels derive from truly global collaboration. A global collaboration place (iCollabR8) facilitates several projects simultaneously. Some members are elected to take lead roles in development. Other members provide feedback and suggestions. All members feel connected with the final productions.
When eventually presented the opportunity of time, I realised that at best, I was good for a few versus. I couldn't come up with an original tune. Even my chorus was questionable. From internet searches, I discovered "song-writing consultants" who help complete partially developed songs. But who's to say their contribution best marries with my lyrics?
"I'll post my lyrics on the internet and award a prize for the person who contributes music that brings them to life", I considered. But then took this idea further - why should I select the winner, why not allow a broader audience to decide? And what if this audience, after engaging with the process, were the first to download the completed song?
This doesn't need to be limited to songs, nor do I need to be a main contributor.
The problem in brief:
Is it possible to establish a space that:
- facilitates projects based on ideas of members
- allows members to elect other members to become major contributors (eg the music, verse, chorus, video etc) for each project
- allows members to contribute ideas and vote on options as a project is developed
- create an initial market based on members who have engaged with teh production process
- facilitates true global collaboration across borders, gender, race and age
- true collaboration delivers superior quality to what any individual could produce
- distributes revenue (however small) to main contributors - that may give them the inspiration and resource to continue their creative talents?
Is it possible that in future, some of the highest quality productions are developed through this global collaboration?
Example:
The Novel
The Creation Coordinator proposed an innovative concept for a novel that involves 4 short-stories. Voters elected this concept over 3 others. One of the remaining concepts was an excellent contender and will be used in the next iCollabR8 “project”.
Each short-story is written from the perspective of a different character and each relates to a common event.
Thousands of voters agree that the perspective of the “onlooker” was best described by a 16 year old from New Zealand.
He subsequently posts various situations on the website as he develops his story. Suggestions are provided by members and enhanced by other members. Many of the contributions appear in the sort-story in one form or another.
Each character is authentic as they are developed by an individual from around the world that best related to them. The novel is published as an eBook and in paper back.
Much of the profits are distrubuted to the lead contributors.
The funds and the success provide one of the key contributors with the spark to continue to pursue their creative ambitions.
Potential Business Model
The primary objectives of iCollabR8:
engage people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures from around the world to create high quality work - superior to that which any individual could produce.
provide inspiration and opportunity to people from around the world to pursue their creative ambitions.
be financially self-sufficient
(if successful) establish a new paradigm in creative content development
- Membership is free – however when members join they are required to agree to iCollabR8’s Code of Ethics and commercial code
- The cost of developing and maintaining the site is borne by site owner
- The site owner will support the funding for publication of initial completed creations (ie until there is sufficient working capital from product revenues)
- Successful creations will generate income (eg as songs and eBooks are downloaded)
- Income will be used to pay for publication and hosting costs
- Much of the profits will be distributed to the Coordinating Contributors for that product
- Income distribution rules will be simple (eg generally split on an even basis amongst Coordinating Contributors).
- Rules will be outlined prior to members seeking election to the role of Coordinating Contributor
Critical Success Factors
1) Industrialised portals: industrialised web-site (eg enables secured “project areas” for managed collaboration), blog, Facebook etc that support large scale collaboration.
2) Robust Intellectual Property Management: iCollabR8 must maintain an unhindered right to use the IP provided voluntarily by members.
3) Sense of collaboration above competition if a member does not get elected to be a main contributor, they are still encouraged to contribute to the end product.
4) Large scale, global marketing campaign to generate significant interest and build momentum, SEO
5) Maintain momentum members will likely come and go, however continually pursuing new creations every 4 – 8 weeks will raise different topics of interest and allow members to easily reconnect.
6) Community above individual: collaboration by definition is about the contribution of many, not the success of one.
Possible Engagement Model (partnering with a Higher Education Provider)
- Participate in the launch of iCollabR8 as an end-end and ongoing project, involving:
* Viability assessment – uniqueness and attractiveness of the concept
* Strategy – for all stages: launch, momentum, expansion (as well as potential exit)
* Partner Engagement – legal (manage IP strategy), web/SEO, production
* Content management – contributing new project proposals, assessing and selecting members to take collaboration coordination roles within a project, overseeing production
* Marketing – promotion pre and post launch, via traditional and social media ¢Integrate the iCollabR8 platform as a tool within curriculum esp. creative arts, social media courses
- a book written by 1 author is assumed to be lesser quality that true collaboration
- a 16 year old girl in Nigeria, 65 year old man in Singapore and 27 year old in Spain collaborate to develop the most successful song of the year
- some of the greatest creative talent has been provided inspiration from their success on iCollabR8
- anyone with 3 versus can team with the planet to get a good song produced!
1) gain feedback, comments and suggestions to improve this concept
2) find a partner who will benefit from the platform and be able to facilitate ongoing projects (such as a creative arts higher-education provider)
3) establish a platform to enable robust collaboration
4) submit 2-3 initial projects to gain interest
5) undertake initial SEO and social media marketing to launch the idea and gain some momentum
I like the idea of launching this through an education provider. If done through a graduate program, this may help provide enough quality content to get started. However, ideally, you do not want this site to become elitist - there's no reason why this couldn't be expanded to include children's books, comics etc.
To be successful, this needs to be a highly inclusive environment.
I guess finding a good partner and launching with a high quality product initially will be key to success.
Great idea!

Marcus -
Thanks for the post. Please take a look at http://www.innocentive.com
I think this site is very similar to the concept you are describing. I believe this site was launched by Eli Lilly.

Matt, thanks for the comment. Innocentive looks like a great site but seems focused on innovative ideas etc.
iCollabR8 would be focused on a few projects at a time and would facilitate the development and completion of creative work such as music, a screen play, novel etc - ie any creative outcome that could be practically developed in collaboration.

Hello Marcus,
When I began reading your hack I thought perhaps you had found a proven way to get over the writer's block. Then I decided you were developing a way to leverage the power of the net for simple folks to achieve global exposure for their creative ideas and feeligs. Wow. It would be great to have a site that transforms the scale of ideas from the word Go and gives the pleasure of being connected as well. Finally it came to me that you were seeking to convert this into a monearily rewarding experience as well. Makes sense. Linus Torvalds created a language to be reckoned with via this route. It is certainy giving a headache to MS. And Redhat has progressed to make money out of it.
I would say you are on track. Best wishes.
Regards,
Raj Kumar
