The manager as an entrepreneur

What is an entrepreneur? First and foremost it is an individual, who is capable of making an assessment of all the means directly available to him, make a product out of them and bring it to market. Of course, a business plan can help but it is no guaranty for success as starting his own business is a lively adventure and the plan will most certainly have to be redefined, adjusted along the way. Of course, some capital to start with can help but how many entrepreneurs started with almost nothing?
Let's apply these principles to management innovation: Do we need a Management innovation plan? Maybe but the plan is very likely to change anyway as innovation is an adventure like starting his own business. Do we need funds or a sponsor? It would certainly help but it is not critical to get us started. As a matter of fact, all you need to get you and your team started on the path of management innovation is good will, yours and theirs. The same way an entrepreneur would assess what are the means available to him to start his own business, assess the means available to you to drive management innovation in your own organization. Start small and build on it. Look out for stakeholders within and outside of your team, who are willing to endorse and support your ideas.
Management innovation is a journey, you can spend your life planning for it or you can start it now and discover it on the go. You may be scared that there will be false starts, there will be false steps but don't forget that you will have small successes too. All things being considered, the worse may be that you never crossed the "start" line...
