Me in Three
On one organization or another's payroll since 15 years old (18 total), I have experienced numerous managers -- blue collar, white collar, for-profit, public sector, military, and academia. Despite having a PhD in marketing, I have come to believe that management is the linchpin of continued organizational success.
For reasons perhaps best known to psychologists, we too often devalue maturing processes that require time and challenging experiences in favor of expediency. Anything less than excellence is failure and now is the preferred time period. With my faculty and students I actively try to fight this.
Some things I value: honest feedback, self-reflection, intellectual challenges, time with family, a vibrant city, personal growth, a well-written story, Jeff Beck.
Some things I find troubling: oversized egos, ignorance of the facts, whining, simplistic answers, rewards delinked from responsibility and accountability, show over substance.
