We are getting revved up for MIX Mashup 2014—and we hope you are too. We’re working hard to develop a program and create an experience that’s even more powerful and rewarding than our inaugural event.

We’ll be featuring the most provocative and pioneering thinkers and leaders reinventing organizations and changing the way we change; we'll go deep into the insights and lessons learned by in-the-trenches management innovators, and we'll not only inspire, but equip you to launch your own experiments and make a real impact in your own organizations and the wider world.

Today, we’re delighted to share some of the speakers we have lined up for you, as well as some of the core themes we’ll be exploring together.

There is a lingering notion in the world of business and beyond that organizations are things with four walls, that employees are people who report to work inside them every day for years on end, that work is a matter of executing on defined “KPIs,” and that success is a product of climbing ladders and exerting an ever-greater span of control.

We are at a genuine inflection point when it comes to how we organize human effort to productive ends. In this creative and disruptive economy, where the challenge is to inspire and mobilize the full imagination, initiative, and passion of every single person, every single day, leaders must rethink their organization’s boundaries, redesign work, redefine the work of leadership, and re-jigger their measure of value.

Specifically, organizations that are built to thrive in the 21 st century must focus both on unleashing human capacity —designing environments and systems for work that inspire individuals to contribute their full imagination, initiative, and passion—and on aggregating human capability —leveraging new social, mobile, and digital technologies to activate, enlist, and organize talent across boundaries.

Those are the twin challenges we tackled with the Unlimited Human Potential M-Prize . We put out the call for the most progressive practices and innovative ideas for unleashing human capability . And we asked, how can we tap into emerging digital technologies and the principles that undergird them (such as transparency, collaboration, meritocracy, open­ness, commu­nity and autonomy) to create organizations that are truly fit for human beings?

Let’s face it, there is a whole lot more enthusiasm for making organizations more open, dynamic, and free than there is progress. Why? Control has been the iron fist behind too many organizations for too long. And unleashing freedom inside them requires dismantling deeply-embedded management principles and practices. Of course, it’s not an either/or proposition. The real trick—and the far greater degree of difficulty—is reimagining organizations, redesigning work, redefining leadership and rethinking the measure of value in a way that transcends the tradeoff between freedom and control.

Thanks to the emerging ecosystem of digital, mobile, social technologies and the principles that undergird them—including openness, community, collaboration, experimentation, meritocracy, and autonomy—we can imagine organizations that are both large and human scale, efficient and flexible, disciplined and inspiring. And thanks to the participants in the Digital Freedom Challenge , we don’t have to just imagine them—we can explore dozens of real-world case studies and bold new approaches to dramatically expanding individual autonomy at work without compromising the ability to scale, coordinate, and get important things done together.
